Inaugurated in 1912, this beautiful Art Nouveau building has been, since its creation, the meeting place par excellence of Prague society. The Municipal House houses two restaurants, a café, an American bar, exhibition halls, several reception rooms ... and one of the most beautiful concert halls in the city: Sala Smetana.
In the present building, was located the old imperial palace built at the end of century XIV by the emperor Wenceslao IV. Real apartments for a century, converted into a seminary and soon into barracks, the building was little by little abandoned before being destroyed in 1902.
In the middle of the National Renaissance, at the same time as the Germans took control of the street Na Prikopě, the Czech expressed the vitality of their culture with the construction of a multipurpose building where cultural activities were offered accessible to all and in which the prestige of the city. The monumental façade of the main entrance highlights an allegorical mosaic of '' The Apotheosis of Prague ''.
The Art Nouveau style was not chosen by chance although it was considered out of fashion at the beginning of the 20th century. This era witnessed the triumph of decorative arts throughout Europe, so a generation of artists - architects, sculptors, painters, mosaics, plasterers, cabinet makers, glassmakers - have combined their talents to create a masterpiece with stunning décor.
During a stroll through the historic center, enter a hall to admire the prestigious, completely renovated café, and the famous French restaurant, whose stairways are made of ceramics that evoke the ancient city of Prague, the attic where the Pilsen brewery (Plzenska Restaurace ) appreciated for its bucolic charm and Amercian bar.
The Smetana concert hall (with capacity for 1300 people) is the most prestigious venue of the venue (also home to the Prague Symphony Orchestra or FOK). His repertoire shows an interest in 20th century international successes (Ravel, Gershwin ...), but also by the great classics of Czech music of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Municipal House opens each year the Prague Spring Festival with the work of Bedřich Smetana, Má Vlast ("My Fatherland").
Just like in Rudlfinum, watch out for low-quality shows that are performed outside the concerts of the Prague Symphony Orchestra or during festivals. The Smetana Room is often rented out by private musical ensembles.
