The monkey in the pile is kept in Tunja with reverent respect and when one passes in front of him, one must inexorably be silent, at least this is the latest popular belief.
This monument was built in the main square of Tunja and for 3 centuries, almost all the inhabitants of the Boyacá capital were provided with water from this public fountain, which came through the ditch of the Varón and Detrás del Alto paths. The monkey represents the God of silence. His right index finger is on his lips, as if telling the water carriers not to talk so much when they collected the liquid.
The elaboration of this basin dates back to the year 1567, due to the problem of the water supply for the city's consumption. A decade later it was proposed that the city be supplied from the Boyacá River. The master stonemason Diego de Morales built "El Mono de la Pila" in 1573, which stood for more than three centuries in the Plaza Mayor (today that of Bolívar).
Diagonal to the Casa del Escribano Juan de Vargas
The fountain that rests in the square that bears her name is not the original, the statue was damaged in 1872; As a souvenir and value that it represented in its time, a copy was made until 1915, the one that now stands diagonally to the Casa del Escribano Juan de Vargas.
