On one of the foothills of the Portel mountain range, the castle stands in a dominant position over the medieval village. In the vicinity are worth visiting, besides the castle, the Mother Church of Vera Cruz, the caves of Algar and the Alqueva dam.
The castle, in Gothic style, presents heptagonal plant reinforced by towers of circular plant in the vertices. Its shape, a novelty in Portuguese military architecture at the time, seems to have been inspired by the Castle of Angers in France.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the complex was classified as a National Monument by Decree, published on June 23, 1910.
